Almost a decade after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius is in the spotlight once again after being released on parole. His trial in 2013 got a lot of media attention as several allegations were hurled against him. After the proceedings, the former paralympic star was convicted and was sentenced to five years in jail which changed to 13 years following appeals. While Pistorius claimed that he killed his girlfriend after mistaking her for a burglar, messages exchanged between the duo contradicted his assertion. The texts accessed by Mirror revealed the toxic nature of their relationship and the way violent outbursts were already in the mix way before the attacks.

The couple had been dating for three months before Pistorius killed his girlfriend on Valentine's Day in 2013. He alleged that he heard sounds coming from the bathroom, and fired his gun believing it was an intruder. It turned out to be his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a model who was then at the peak of her career. He immediately called for help but Steenkamp died on the spot.

But in the light of findings after further investigation, he was charged with murder. The prosecution appealed to the court that Pistorius was spewing lies, and the intention was to always murder Steenkamp. They presented the text messages as evidence to prove their point.

Some weeks prior to the murder, Steenkamp messaged the athlete, "I'm scared of you." In the messages, she described how Pistorius was insecure in their relationship and often used to throw tantrums out of jealousy. At one point things got so out of hand that he accused the model of flirting with a friend's husband at an engagement party. She also wrote, “I’ve never been a stripper or a ho,” indicating that such terms were used for her by Pistorius in their relationship.

Certain messages also indicate that she was not happy with the way the relationship was shaping up for her. “I am the girl who let go with you even when I was scared out of my mind to. I’m the girl who fell in love with you and wanted to tell you this weekend. But I’m also the girl that gets sidestepped when you are in a s**t mood," she messaged him. There were also double standards at play that were further frustrating her. “We are living in a double standard relationship…every 5 seconds I hear how u dated another chick, you really have dated a lot of people, yet you get upset if I mention ONE funny story with a long-term boyfriend," she explained. "I’m scared of you sometimes and how you snap at me and how you will react to me." The model was disappointed because she felt that Pretorius had stopped putting in effort to keep the relationship smooth sailing.  After being released on parole, the Olympian has struggled to get a job, as per FOX News. He currently lives with his uncle and volunteers at a church.
