Ukraine Officials Urge Brazil to Arrest Vladimir Putin During His Possible Upcoming Visit
Ukraine's officials are asking Brazil authorities to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin after receiving intelligence reports that he is set to attend the G20 summit. International Criminal Court in March 2023, issued an arrest warrant against Putin on the charges of war crime, The Independent reported. He was accused of forcefully deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. Despite the warrant several countries have refused to follow through with the directives of the ICC and arrest Putin in his subsequent visits, BBC reported. ICC has also issued a warrant against Russia's commissioner for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the same crimes. Moscow has denied the allegations put forward by ICC, calling the warrants "outrageous."
G20 summit
The G20 summit is set to happen in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19, 2024. This is a yearly meeting, where 19 member countries, plus the African Union and the European Union come together to discuss global challenges. Last year Putin did not attend the meeting in India, BBC reported. This year, as per information received by Ukraine officials, Putin is changing his stance and will attend the global summit.
Ukraine's plea
Since the release of the arrest warrant, Ukraine authorities have urged the countries, Putin has visited to do their due diligence and arrest him, BBC reported. They called on Mongolian authorities in September but to no avail. This time they have turned their sights towards Brazil, The Independent reported. “Due to information that Putin may attend the G20 summit in Brazil I would like to reiterate that it’s an obligation for the Brazilian authorities as a state party of the Rome Statute to arrest him if he dares to visit,” Ukraine prosecutor general Andrii Kostin said.
Brazil's response
Brazil authorities have stated that Putin has been extended an official invitation but no reply has come from his or Russia's side, RBC-Ukraine reported. Kostin has encouraged Brazil to go through with the arrest due to its status as a democratic and law-based state. He has also warned that Brazil's failure to make this arrest will set a very wrong precedent for the entire world, showcasing that world leaders accused of war crimes can travel scot-free.
Present situation in Ukraine
Ukraine's path in this war against Russia has been anything but smooth, The Independent reported. Though recently there have been small victories, that are encouraging them to dream about regaining their long-lost peace. Ukraine officials claimed that for the first time in 48 days, they did not face any drone or missile attack from Russia on their frontlines. This momentous event happened in October.
