Volodymyr Zelenskyy Claims That Ukraine Is Set to Face Its Worst Winter Due to Russia’s Attacks on Its Power Grid
The Ukrainian President is asking other countries to step up and help his country with the various challenges thrown at them by Russia in the ongoing war. In his recent press conference, Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared with the media the issues Ukraine is facing amidst its enemy's attack on its energy sources, Politico reported. “Winter is coming, so we have to prepare,” he said during a joint appearance in Brussels with European Council President Charles Michel. EU top diplomat Josep Borrell explained how Russia continuously targets Ukraine's attempts to rebuild its energy infrastructure, which has now put the entire country in huge jeopardy, for the upcoming winter.
Russia's suspected attack
In September, Zelenskyy addressed fellow world leaders at the United Nations and warned them of Russia's upcoming plans, The Washington Post reported. He claimed that the Vladimir Putin-led country is poised to attack Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. Zelenskyy explained that such a move would hamper the energy supply in his home country and cautions the other countries about the overreaching consequences of such a move. “Recently, I received yet another alarming report from our intelligence. Now, Putin does seem to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and infrastructure, aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid,” Zelensky said. “Any missile or drone strike or any critical incident in the energy system could lead to a nuclear disaster. A day like that must never come.”
Ukraine's Winter Issues
Zelenskyy shared in the United Nations that Russia's persistent attacks on his country have left his fellow citizens on the doorstep of their toughest winter yet, The Washington Post reported. He claims that there is a possibility that Ukrainians could have to face the upcoming winter without any heat or electricity. He also highlighted that if Putin succeeds in his goal, not only Ukraine but the entire world will be impacted. “Just imagine, please, your country, with 80 percent of its energy system gone. … What kind of life would that be?” Zelensky said. “If God forbid, Russia causes a nuclear disaster at one of our nuclear power plants, radiation will not respect state borders.” Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal in a press meeting asked European countries to come together and help Ukraine in energy struggles, Politico reported.
Ukraine's call for help
Zelenskyy has been making rounds all through the world to gather support for Ukraine against Russia, The Washington Post reported. Ukrainian authorities are not limiting their efforts only towards superpowers like America, but also towards countries with a history of colonization. “The world has already been through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of those who are smaller,” Zelenskyy said in the United Nations. “Every country, including China, Brazil, European nations, African nations, Middle East, all understand why these must remain in the past. And Ukrainians will never accept, will never accept why anyone in the world believes that such a brutal colonial past, which suits no one today, can be imposed on Ukraine now.” Ukrainian officials have put together a 'victory plan' that Zelenskyy is presenting to various leaders to get the required collaboration. He is also asking for permission to launch missiles into Russian territories.
