University of Massachusetts Student Fled From Campus in 2004 Claiming There Was a 'Family Death.' She Remains Missing to This Date.
A nursing student left her campus in 2004 and was nowhere to be found, leaving behind a mystery, which authorities and her family have been trying to solve to this date. Maura Murray went missing on February 9, 2004, from Massachusetts, and after a car crash was reported, she disappeared from the face of Earth, PEOPLE reported. The world moved on, but her family is still waiting for answers.
At the time of her disappearance, Maura Murray was completing her semester at the University of Massachusetts, PEOPLE reported. The student allegedly told her professor that because of a family death, she needed to leave the campus. After she went missing her family claimed that no such incident had happened. Investigation revealed that before leaving Massachusetts, she had withdrawn almost everything from her bank account and bought alcohol.
Three hours after Maura Murray left her campus, authorities received reports of a single-car accident in Haverhill. Maura Murray was allegedly the one driving the car involved in the crash. Two individuals informed the authorities about the incident on 911 calls, and both of them supposedly saw the woman. However, when the police arrived on the scene minutes later, Maura Murray was nowhere to be found.
Authorities and the general public have speculated regarding Maura Murray's whereabouts, but no conclusion has been reached by the investigative teams, PEOPLE reported. How Maura Murray went missing left her family in a state of limbo. "The worst part is the ambiguity and having the heartache every single day for two decades," Julie Murray, the victim's sister shared. "We don't have answers, and we don't have Maura."
Investigators discovered that Maura Murray was going through a turbulent time in her life, The Sun reported. She was battling an eating disorder as well as having conflicts with her long-distance boyfriend. All of these made officials think that she could be 'possibly suicidal.' Her family has rejected this notion.
One of the theories put forward by authorities is that Maura Murray wandered into the woods and died, PEOPLE reported. Her family wants proof of that. "If she wandered into the woods, where are her belongings or her body?" Julie Murray said. "She was met with foul play and is most likely no longer with us, and that's the worst possible outcome for Maura and my family."
Investigators have not given up on the case and continue to work towards bringing the Murray family some closure, CBS News reported. Recently they shared a new age progression photo of the victim, asking the public to report someone who looked like that.
"We are continuing to work with our local, state, and federal partners, including the FBI, to identify resources to try to advance this case," New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said. "It is our hope that this twentieth anniversary of Ms. Murray's disappearance will bring renewed attention to the case that might ultimately lead to justice and closure for the Murray family."
Julie Murray has recently launched a podcast where she is set to discuss everything about the case, The Independent reported. She brought on several family members to talk about their experience with Maura Murray and the entire case.
"It was very therapeutic to sit down with my family and talk about these intricate details," said Julie Murray. "It wasn’t easy, obviously it hurt, but at the end of it, there was this collective sigh of relief like 'OK we did it, we told the story, we did right by Maura and that’s huge for a family like mine.'"
