UFOs have always been an intriguing topic of discussion amongst the general public and scientific community. Various parties have put forward theories regarding the origin and nature of UFOs.

The most common belief is that UFOs come from space and are controlled by bipedal, hairless, human-like beings with large brains, large eyes, small noses, and small mouths, Live Science reported. These creatures have gained the moniker, 'alien' amongst the populace.

Michael Masters, a professor of biological anthropology at Montana Technological University in Butte proposed a different perspective on this long-held belief in his book, "Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach to the UFO Phenomenon," Live Science reported. Masters explained in the book that these aliens, might be humans from the future.

Masters backs his claim by stating that creatures in UFOs are often said to have the ability to communicate with humans in their languages and possess advanced technology, which seems to be built upon present works, Live Science reported.

He believes that a comprehensive analysis of consistent patterns of long-term biocultural change throughout human evolution and recent advances in time travel makes the possibility of these 'aliens' being humans noteworthy.

"We may go on to look like them," Masters said, referring to typical depictions of "little green men," CBS News reported. "Based on our evolutionary characteristics over the last 6 to 8 million years, we are arguably going to have bigger heads, smaller faces, more advanced technology, and a lot of these traits are described in association with these beings."

"The book ties together those known aspects of our evolutionary history with what is still an unproven, unverified aspect of UFOs and aliens," Masters said, Live Science reported. Masters believes that it is more plausible that the aliens are humans rather than extraterrestrial beings.

"We know we're here. We know humans exist. We know that we've had a long evolutionary history on this planet. And we know our technology is going to be more advanced in the future. I think the simplest explanation, innately, is that it is us. I'm just trying to offer what is likely the most parsimonious explanation," Masters explained, Live Science reported.

Masters also talks about the reasons why humans would want to travel in the past using UFOs, Live Science reported. As an anthropologist, he understands that revisiting the past would help experts know more about the evolutionary history of humans.

He believes that the situation is similar in other branches of studies. "The alleged abduction accounts are mostly scientific in nature. It's probably future anthropologists, historians, linguists that are coming back to get information in a way that we currently can't without access to that technology," Masters said.

Masters is not dismissing the possibility of tourism, Live Science reported. He does think that in the future humankind might pay money to visit their favorite period.

"I do think that some component of it is also tourism," he added. "Undoubtedly in the future, there are those who will pay a lot of money to have the opportunity to go back and observe their favorite period in history. Some of the most popular tourist sites are the pyramids of Giza and Machu Picchu in Peru …old and prehistoric sites."

Masters wants more studies and analyses to be done on the relationship between time travel and UFOs, Live Science reported. "There's certainly still missing pieces of the puzzle," he said.

"There are aspects of time that we don't yet understand. Wanted is a theory of quantum gravity, and we can meld general relativity and quantum mechanics. I'm just trying to put forth the best model I can based on current scientific knowledge. Hopefully, over time, we can continue to build on this."

In one of his papers, Masters puts forward another theory that these 'aliens' could be walking on Earth and passing themselves off as humans. "We're not saying this is right, we're not saying that this is absolutely 100% the case, we're saying these are some potentialities, these are some possibilities to help explain the origin of these beings," Masters said, CBS News reported.

Jan Harzan, director of the nonprofit Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), is not completely on board with Masters' claims but supports him in his demand for a multidisciplinary approach concerning the research regarding UFOs, Live Science reported. In his opinion, experts should look beyond the conventional belief that UFOs are operated by creatures from other planets.

"Masters postulates that using a multidisciplinary scientific approach to the UFO phenomenon will be what it takes to solve this mystery once and for all, and I couldn't agree more," Harzan stated.

"The premise that UFOs are us from the future is one of many possibilities that MUFON is exploring to explain the UFO phenomenon. All we know for sure is that we are not alone. Now the question becomes, 'Who are they?' And Masters makes a great case for the time-traveler hypothesis."
