A rare gold coin dating back to the time of a lesser-known ruler in Britain was unearthed by a metal detectorist in 2023. The metal detectors found the coin in Hampshire County, England and it was auctioned off for $24,720, according to Live Science. The coin was minted during the Iron Age when a ruler had claimed that he was "as mighty as a God". The coin held Latin alphabetic inscriptions and the name 'Esunertos' was found embellished on it, according to a statement released by the Spink auction house, per the outlet. ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ

The name roughly translated as "mighty as the god Esos." Esunertos came from the Gaulish language, which was commonly spoken during that period. Archaeologist, John Sills, from the University of Oxford's Institute of Archaeology, was the one who examined the coin before it was auctioned off. Sills noted that the coin dates back to the time between 50 B.C. and 30 B.C., after the invasion of Julius Caesar in Britain around 55 B.C. to 54 B.C. However, Caesar's invasion proved to be a failure and he couldn't establish a stronghold of Roman empire over Britain. ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ

In 43 A.D., Emperor Claudius invaded Britain and this time, the Romans were able to control the land for a long period. Sills told the outlet over email that the rare coin happened to be only the third coin from the period that bore the name of Esunertos, making it a rare discovery. However, all three coins were unearthed in the same region, suggesting that the territory was controlled by Esunertos, which partially covers the western part of modern-day Hampshire. "In the time after Caesar's invasions, the political situation in Britain may have been in flux," Ian Leins, a curator of collections and interiors at English Heritage, a charity that manages the historic monuments in the United Kingdom, told Live Science.

Romans managed to conquer the areas of Gaul by 50 B.C. and there was a threat of another invasion in Britain. "Rome was meddling in the affairs of Britain and the Britons themselves were suddenly faced with a range of new opportunities and threats that resulted from the changing political landscape across the channel," Leins explained. "Within a rapidly changing political landscape, I suspect that new political leaders emerged, sometimes flourishing, sometimes disappearing as quickly as they had appeared."

Lenis also theorized how an individual with enough power and wealth to extend their influence, could have started issuing coins during their reign. Esunertos was possibly one of those influential people during that time who decided to mint his coins. "We'll never know whether he actually called himself a "king," Leins said. "His position was probably based on contacts, ancestry, land, and control of resources. The rest is pure speculation. Was he a popular, charismatic, elected leader? Was his authority based on fear or brutality? We will almost certainly never know the answer to these questions!"
