‘You don’t do that to no children’: 4-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot In Virginia And One Face Charges
A 4-year-old boy was fatally shot in Virginia and a man is behind bars and accused of murder, authorities said.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sept. 25, police in Suffolk responded to a report of a shooting involving the young boy at a home, the Associated Press reported.
Emergency responders treated the child at the scene before rushing him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Police took Antonio Lonnell Melton, 38, into custody in connection with the incident and charged him with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, and reckless handling of a firearm, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Melton was being held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
Officials have not release further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
“You don’t do that to no children. It makes me hot,” Tim Pelham, who lives in the neighborhood where the slaying occurred, told WTKR.
“You’d be surprised what you might see out here now,” he continued. “You used to walk out the door 25, or 30 years ago and go back in there without nothing happening. But now, it’s something happening every day out here.”
