A man took $87,000 to build a home for a military widow and her kids. He never did and now faces criminal charges, police said.
In early 2021, police in Owens Cross Roads in Alabama took a report from a woman whose husband committed suicide after experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. He was a military veteran.
The woman paid contract Walt Vernon O’Dare $87,560 to build a home for her and her kids, police said. The money came from her husband’s military life insurance police, police noted.
O’Dare never built the home and fled the area.
Police learned there were similar accusations against O’Dare made by others, authorities noted. A warrant was issued but he could not be found.
In late 2021, O’Dare was arrested in Tennessee on similar accusations but was released due to COVID issues. He was difficult to find after that.
On June 23, police in Alabama said O’Dare was arrested again in Tennessee. He is now booked into an Alabama jail and faces a charge of first-degree theft.
