A Mesa, Arizona man has been arrested for murdering one victim at the motel, police said.
The suspect, Stevie Jones II, 27, allegedly tried to hide the gun he used under his bed after the shooting, according to AZ Family.
Around 6:45 a.m. Juen 27, Mesa police officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Frontier Motel. When officers arrived, they found Michael Gonzalez, 28, dead from gunshot wounds.
The victim was found with multiple spent shell casings near his body, AZ Family reported.
The next day, Jones was identified as an investigative lead and was detained along with his girlfriend, according to police.
Authorities have not detailed how the two men knew each other or what led to the shooting.
During interviews, officers say they learned Jones initially fired his handgun at Gonzalez through the glass of the hotel room before following him to the room and firing several more rounds.
Police say Gonzalez was ultimately killed in the parking lot.
Jones’s girlfriend admitted to police Jones had a semi-automatic handgun that he kept under the bed in their box springs, along with ammo, according to AZ Family.
When Jones returned after allegedly shooting the victim, his girlfriend told police that he said, “I hit him,” and “I had to make sure he didn’t come back,” AZ Family reported.
Police say Jones refused to speak with detectives and declined to be interviewed, according to AZ Family.
Jones was booked for charges of first-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons. Jones had his bond set at $1 million.
