NOT A HAPPY CELEBRATION: SUSPECT WANTED FOR MURDER TURNS HIMSELF IN TO FLORDIA POLICE ON HIS 17TH BIRTHDAY
Not the best teen birthday.
Law enforcement officials announced the arrest of a suspect connected to the fatal shooting of a juvenile in Florida. A suspect who turned himself into police on his birthday.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were investigating a separate incident in the University area of Tampa at around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 17 when they received information about a boy discovered dead outside a duplex.
The victim had suffered trauma to his upper body.
Detectives investigating the homicide later secured a warrant for the arrest of a juvenile male suspect they believed was responsible for the murder and said he may be “armed, dangerous, and on the run.”
On Feb. 24, the day of his 17th birthday, Kanye Vasnon Mordica turned himself in to HCSO deputies. He now faces a charge of second-degree murder with a firearm.
Mordica was being held at the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The name of the victim will not be released due to Florida’s Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved constitutional amendment which some law enforcement agencies interpret as a limitation to what information they can provide about a crime.
“It’s always tragic when a young life is taken too soon, especially due to a senseless act of violence,” said HCSO Sheriff Chad Chronister to WFLA.
