A Bar Patron Called A New York Bouncer 'Weirdo'. So The Bouncer Covered A Surveillance Camera And Killed Him.
A Long Island bar employee who tried to hide a deadly beating by covering a security camera was convicted of manslaughter.
On April 24, a Suffolk County, New York jury found David Cruz, 32, guilty of killing Jake Scott, 32, outside the bar last August.
Prosecutors admit Scott and Cruz had an argument, in which witnesses say Scott called the bouncer “a weirdo.”
A defense attorney argued when Scott went to the bar, he “wanted to fight.”
A news release from District Attorney Raymond Tierney says Cruz went over the edge by beating Scott severely to the head around 2:45 a.m.
But first, Cruz covered a security camera with a shirt. Cruz may not have realized a nearby business also had a camera, which recorded his actions.
Scott wound up in a coma and died 11 days after the beating.
According to Newsday, the jury had an option of convicting Cruz on a lesser charge of assault.
The New York Post reports Cruz will be sentenced May 25. He could receive 25 years in prison.
