British military sources reportedly recently disclosed that the Royal Navy intercepted a Russian submarine operating off the coast of Ireland.
The incident, which is said to have occurred six months ago near Cork Harbour, only recently come to light and is suspected to be part of a spy mission orchestrated by Vladimir Putin's authoritarian regime, the Irish Examiner reported.
According to reports, the Russian submarine was positioned outside the entrance to Cork Harbour, accompanied by a Russian-registered "civilian" vessel responsible for surface surveillance.
British authorities deployed a helicopter under the cover of darkness and successfully dropped sonar equipment into the water to monitor the submarine's movements.
A Royal Navy anti-submarine frigate eventually arrived in the area, monitoring the situation and ultimately "chasing off" the Russian submarine, the Irish Examiner reported.
Russia's actions did not violate any international laws since the submarine remained just outside the 12-mile coastal limit.
