A husband allegedly tried to kill his wife on a Coronado, California, beach and bury her alive before she escaped the attack.

Jose Luis Mares III, 23, was charged with attempted murder, assaulting causing injury and domestic violence in connection to the case. 

Shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, police went to the beach after a woman called to say her husband tried to kill her, according to Coronado police. 

When officers arrived, they found the victim badly injured on the sidewalk. 

Mares and the victim got into an argument and then he started to attack his wife, police say. He then tried to throw her in the ocean and bury her in a hole in the sand.

The victim escaped and ran to a nearby street where a person passing by saw her, police say. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Mares fled the scene before police arrived. 

Officers found Mares a short time later hiding the backyard of a nearby home, according to authorities. 

Mares was a parolee who had been previously convicted for carjacking and burglary, according to court documents obtained by FOX5.
