Watch as police shoot man wielding large knife at hotel in California after long standoff
A man armed with a knife was shot by police in California after an approximate 20-hour standoff in a hotel room on Feb. 24.
Police body cam footage of the incident was released Tuesday, showing an officer shoot the man twice as he approached police with a butcher-style knife. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting followed hours and hours of officers, family and mental health workers pleading with the man to come out of the room, the video shows.
Just before 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, Pittsburg officers were called to the Hampton Inn located in the 1200 block of California Avenue for the report of a man using furniture to barricade himself in his room and yelling "help" several times, according to police.
The woman in the video who is heard calling police reported that people could hear glass being broken inside the room. Family members told the woman that he was having a "mental issue," according to the video.
Police arrived on the scene, noticing the exterior window of the room was broken, and later entered and attempted to convince the man to leave the room. In the video, the man can be heard telling police that he's fine and doesn't need any help.
"I just need some time. People are trying to kill me," he can be heard saying in the footage.
Police brought in their crisis intervention team and members from the Contra Costa Mental Health Evaluation Team and The Mobile Crisis Response Team around 2 p.m.
The mental health workers attempted to speak with the man but had little progress. "I don't need a therapist," the man can be heard telling the mental health workers in the video.
Police had a utility boom truck come on site to block the broken window so the man wouldn't fall or jump out, the video notes.
Throughout the evening, family, mental health workers and police tried to talk the man into coming out with no avail. At one point, police noted, the man was making statements such as wanting to "end it all."
At midnight, the mental health workers left, leaving just police to continue trying to convince the man to come out, the video notes.
At one point, the man stuck the knife through the damaged door in an attempt to stab tactical officers on scene, the video states.
After 6 a.m. the next day, police began to get more aggressive, telling him the man he had only two options: drop the knife and come out. Soon after, police deployed several rounds of chemical agents in hopes of forcing the man out, according to the video.
At 8 a.m., police deployed a final round of chemical agents that forced the man to leave the room. The man entered the hallway where police were situation with a large knife in his hand, police say.
Two officers discharged sponge projectiles, hitting the man, but with little impact. The man then turned around and started to approach officers with the knife raised above his head, the video shows.
