An innocent victim was killed by a stray bullet, and police in North Carolina say they arrested a suspect.
Last week, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced the arrest of Michael Anthony Cornwell Jr. in connection to the case. He was charged with first-degree murder.
Around 3 a.m. on March 5, police responded to several 911 calls about a reported shooting.
Police went to Hillgrove Lane and found several gun casings in the parking lot. They also found James Frieburg inside an apartment. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Investigators say that Freiburg was shot by a stray bullet that stemmed from a large shootout in a parking lot between two groups of people he did not know.
Officers identified Cornwell as a suspect and he was arrested months later.
