Man in Florida Accused of Shooting Neighbor in Neck During Game of Checkers
A Florida suspect was arrested on an attempted murder charge after he shot a neighbor he was playing checkers with, police said.
On the evening of May 13, police in Gainesville said Henry Lee Pope, 63, got into a dispute with the victim while the two were outside the Sunshine Inn, the Alachua Chronicle reported.
According to the outlet, police said Pope allegedly claimed he was upset at his checkers opponent because the man was intoxicated and would not stop leaning and falling on his vehicle.
After allegedly shooting the man with a gun he had hidden inside a fanny pack, Pope fled the scene but was found around 12:40 a.m. hiding in a bush, police said.
Pope was booked into the Alachua County jail.
The victim was being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck.
