Man Accused Of Fatally Shooting Georgia Corrections Officer
A Georgia man was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a corrections officer, authorities said.
According to Gwinnett County officials, shortly after 6:20 a.m. on Dec. 13, officers in Lawrenceville responding to a report of person shot found Senior Correctional Officer Scott Riner, 59, suffering a gunshot wound.
A preliminary investigation determined Riner was shot in a parking lot outside the correctional facility where he worked for over a decade, officials said.
Around 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 16, the Gwinnett Police SWAT Team arrested a suspect in the case, 22-year-old Yahya Abdulkadir, in Lithonia and charged him with felony murder and aggravated assault.
Officials said investigators had been working “around the clock” on the case before Abdulkadir’s arrest.
“The Gwinnett Police department would like to extend condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers,” officials noted.
The investigation continues and authorities have not released a possible motive for the deadly shooting.
