A North Carolina couple is facing charges in the death of a 6-year-old, though police have released few details regarding the case.
Suspect Devon Nelson, 30, was the child’s father, and the other suspect, Tamara Corbett, 24, is the father’s girlfriend.
On July 11, High Point police officers responded to High Point Medical Center regarding the death of a 6-year-old boy brought to the hospital by his father.
Special Victims Unit and Violent Crimes Unit detectives began investigating the death as suspicious, and quickly determined it should be treated as a homicide, according to authorities
Police obtained search warrants for the residence and the vehicle used to transport the deceased to the hospital.
Both Nelson and Corbett were arrested after questioning on charges of felony child abuse.
The Department of Social Services took custody of two other children, ages three and four, in the home as a result of the charges.
On July 12, detectives attended the autopsy for the deceased child and learned that there was “a significant history and a pattern of physical abuse,” according to police.
The Medical Examiner attributed the death of the child to blunt force trauma about the body. However, police have not said how the boy suffered the fatal injuries.
As a result of the autopsy, Nelson was charged with first-degree murder. Corbett was charged with accessory after the fact.
Both are being held in the Guilford County Jail on $2 million bond.
