An attempted robbery in Dallas led to gunfire where one person was shot. Months later, the victim died and a 17-year-old has been charged with capital murder.
Around 5:45 a.m. Feb. 11, 21-year-old Kasey Lewis was walking to his vehicle near his home in Dallas, according to authorities.
That is when 17-year-old Melvin Alexander Cruz approached Lewis, police said.
Cruz brandished a gun and demanded property from Lewis, which lead to an exchange of gunfire between Cruz and Lewis, officials said.
During the gunfire, Lewis was struck and he died from his injuries on April 11, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Cruz was arrested on April 16, but a Dallas County grand jury handed indicted for him on June 30 on a count of capital murder, authorities said.
He remains in the Dallas County jail with bail set at more than $3 million, police said.
