3-year-old shot himself in the head with gun, adult arrested on firearm charge

A woman has been charged after a 3-year-old boy shot himself in the head with a gun he found in her coat pocket, police in Detroit said.
The unnamed woman has been charged with careless, reckless or negligent use of a firearm, Mlive reported.
The shooting happened around 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 14 at a home in the 1880 block of Lafayette Street in Detroit, Michigan, according to MLive.
The woman was visiting the home to pick up food that was prepared for her by the boy’s mother, Mlive reported.
According to police, the woman took off her coat, which had a handgun in the pocket and hung it on a chair in the living room, according to Mlive.
She went into the kitchen to speak with the child’s mother when they heard a loud bang in the living room, Mlive reported.
The 3-year-old boy found the weapon and shot himself in the head, according to Mlive.
The boy was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital, but he was later in stable condition, Mlive reported.
