Beef Gone Bad: Detroit Gas Station Employee Accused of Shooting Customer in Fatal Beef Jerky Brawl
June 9 2023, Published 3:15 p.m. ET
A gas station clerk in Detroit allegedly fatally shot a customer after they had a dispute over beef jerky, according to authorities.
Around 3:15 a.m. on June 5, officers responded to a gas station in Detroit regarding a report of a shooting, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Once at the scene, police found 25-year-old Anthony McNary “lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the forehead,” officials said.
McNary was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Investigators believe McNary and 40-year-old Moad Mohamed Al-Gaham had a “heated exchange of words” after McNary “took a beef jerky product and placed it in his pocket,” authorities said.
Officials said Al-Gaham then allegedly reached into McNary’s pocket and grabbed the beef jerky then put it back on the shelf. McNary reportedly then tried to pay for the beef jerky, but Al-Gaham “refused to accept the money and made Mr. McNary leave the store.”

Al-Gaham then allegedly locked the gas station doors to stop McNary from coming back inside, authorities said. Al-Gaham then grabbed a handgun, “held it in the line of the victim’s forehead” and fatally shot McNary, who was unarmed at the time.
On June 8, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Al-Gaham was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm. He is scheduled for a probable cause conference on June 22.
