Official Warns of WWIII Amid China and Russia's Nuclear Ambitions Involving Artificial Intelligence
A dire warning has been issued by a senior US official regarding the potential for World War III if Russia and China relinquish control of their nuclear arsenals to artificial intelligence.
Paul Dean, representing the US State Department, emphasized that the United States, Britain and France have committed to maintaining human control over their nuclear weapons and urged Moscow and Beijing to adopt similar policies.
Speaking at a conference in Vienna where officials from over 100 countries gathered to discuss the militarized applications of artificial intelligence, Dean stressed the importance of ensuring that decisions with such profound consequences remain within human hands.
Referring to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, known as the P5, Dean underscored the significance of this issue in the global context.
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg likened the current situation to the "Oppenheimer moment" of our generation, urging international consensus on rules and norms governing AI in warfare.
Meanwhile, efforts by the Biden administration to engage China in discussions regarding nuclear policy and the proliferation of AI have intensified, with recent talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressing these critical issues.

While China advocates for a "no first use" treaty concerning nuclear weapons and seeks bilateral talks with the US on AI management, Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining clear lines of communication to prevent misunderstandings or miscalculations between the two countries.
Despite efforts to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as military communications and counternarcotics, Blinken stressed the need for the United States to remain vigilant about the challenges posed by China and the differing visions for the future held by each nation.
