Suspect Fatally Shot Man After Getting Into Dispute At Alabama Peanut Parade, Police Say
A suspect is under arrest after he got into a fight and allegedly killed a person attending a peanut parade in Alabama, authorities said.
Mekhi Nasir Lawton, 18,faces one count each of murder and first-degree assault in connection with a fatal shooting at the National Peanut Festival Parade in Dothan on Nov. 12, WEAR-TV reported.
According to police, Lawton allegedly got into a dispute at the parade and pulled a gun, firing at Garyoun Fluellen, 22, and a second person.
Fluellen was pronounced dead at an area hospital, and the second shooting victim underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
Lawton turned himself in to authorities shortly before midnight the evening of the incident, police said.
He was being held on a $1.53 million bond.
“We would like to thank members of our community who assisted in bringing quick resolution to this case ensuring this individual is behind bars,” Dothan Police Lieutenant Ronald Hall said.
