A 15-year-old boy in Florida has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a U.S. Army veteran earlier this year, according to authorities.
On Feb. 7, Angela Washington, 61, was shot as she passed through a group of young men outside an Orlando shopping plaza, WKMG reported. The shooter, after leaving Washington lying on the sidewalk, drove off in a sedan.
Around 7 p.m., first responders were called to the scene and found Washington suffering a gunshot wound. They worked to save her life, but she would later die from her injuries, WKMG reported.
Investigators determined Washington was not the intended target of the shooting. One witness who lives by the plaza told WKMG, “She was just an innocent bystander coming to the store and that happened. It could’ve been me, it could’ve been anybody.”
Cops said they obtained video, which showed a group of teens and young men arguing at the mall when one of them pulled out a gun, firing the shot that hit Washington.
During their investigation, detectives talked to several of the people who were outside of the store during the shooting. A reward of $10,000 was issued in March for tips leading to an arrest in the shooting.

Four months later, the Orlando Police Department announced that Samuel Stevens was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Officials said, “Through the relentless efforts of our Homicide Detectives along with cooperation from the community and Crimeline a suspect has been captured.”

Washington was an Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm. She was also a mother and grandmother. Her son, Fernando Washington, spoke with WKMG about his mother.
“I’m relieved that he’s been arrested and they found him, but it doesn’t bring me any closure,” he said. “At the end of the day, I lost my mom, I lost a parent, and no arrest, no future judgment is going to bring her back. I’m thankful for the work that the detectives put in, because they did put in a lot of work.”
