A 14-year-old Florida boy was hit by a car in an apartment complex parking lot, but police say it happened because the driver was shot.
Jose Miguel Ortiz, 29, shot a woman who was driving a Lexus sedan in the parking lot of the apartment complex on Feb.7, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The gunshot caused the woman to crash her car and strike the teen boy, authorities said. The boy died from his injuries.
When police arrived at the apartment complex around 9:30 p.m., they learned the woman in the Lexus was involved in a fight shortly before the crash, police said.
According to authorities, Ortiz fired shots at the car and hit the woman at least once. From there, the Lexus struck the teen boy.
The woman was in her 20s and was initially listed in critical condition, but she has since recovered from her wounds, police said.
She does not face any criminal charges.
Ortiz was arrested at his Tampa, Florida home on April 5 and faces several charges, including first-degree murder, third-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, authorities said.
Ortiz also faces a probation violation charge for a prior cocaine trafficking case, police said.
He is being held in jail without bond.
