Bret Steven Bay, 57, was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death.

Police say Bay strangled Lauryn Marotto, his girlfriend at the time. Her body was found on Jan. 13 on the bedroom floor of their mobile home wrapped in sheets and comforters, according to WKRG 5.

Bay left a handwritten note stating that he and Marotto were involved in a “violent” traffic crash on Jan. 8. He reported Marotto had become “groggy,” and that she had blue lips and was unresponsive.

His note also read: “I know what I’ve done is wrong and gruesome, but I really didn’t want her to go,” according to WKRG 5.

Bay’s roommate called police after finding the note and discovering that Bay and his car were gone, according to the report.

Bay was found and arrested on Feb. 27 in Little Rock, Arkansas, on a warrant for tampering with physical evidence, WKRG 5 reported. He was extradited to Okaloosa County, Florida, this week and held at Okaloosa County Jail.

On May 5, he was served with an additional warrant for homicide by strangulation.
