An undocumented migrant allegedly drove his car while intoxicated in Florida and crashed into another vehicle, killing a 5-year-old girl, police aid.
Ernesto Lopez Morales, 32, an undocumented Guatemalan migrant living in Polk County, Florida, was speeding on S.R. 60 without his headlights and crashed his Suburban into the back of an Elandra, pushing it 600 feet, according to WFLA.
The driver of the Elantra survived with non-life-threatening injuries, but a 5-year-old girl died from the impact, WFLA reported.
“A beautiful 5-year-old beautiful baby was crushed to death,” said Sheriff Grady Judd, according to WFLA.
Cops say paramedics and other bystanders saw Morales run away from the Oct. 23 scene before law enforcement arrived, WFLA reported.
After searching the area, deputies found Morales at a house where he was staying, according to WFLA.
“He flees the scene and leaves the 5-year-old, and for that matter, would have left the mother for dead,” Judd said, according to WFLA.
The sheriff’s office said Morales admitted to drinking six beers and left the home to get more alcohol, WFLA reported.
He also allegedly admitted to driving without his headlights and running from the crash scene since he didn’t have insurance or a driver’s license, according to WFLA.
A blood test found that Morales had a blood alcohol level of 0.108, higher than the legal driving limit .08., WFLA reported.
Morales was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, DUI manslaughter, driving with no driver’s license causing death, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury and DUI property damage, according to WFLA.
Morales is currently in the Polk County Jail on a hold from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, WFLA reported.
