A Florida police officer was arrested and fired after the department determined that he stole money from an inmate.
Tyler Rogers, 37, a now-former Walton County Detention deputy, was charged with petit theft and official misconduct.
Police say they began investigating Rogers on Dec. 16, when an inmate reported that their property wasn't accounted for. Officer reviewed surveillance footage from the department and asked Rogers to take a polygraph test. The officer refused.
According to the Walton County Sheriff's Office, Rogers eventually confessed to stealing $150 from an inmate. He was then arrested and taken to the jail.
“We must hold ourselves – as public servants – to the highest standard,” Sheriff Michael Adkinson told WEAR-TV. “We must act when the oath we swore to uphold is betrayed by one of our own. We owe it to the people we serve and those who perform this job honorable and honestly to be transparent about this incident.”
The sheriff's office stated that Rogers was hired in 2021 and had previously worked with the Department of Corrections for 16 years.
