‘What’s the point?’ Florida suspect accused of fatally shooting man buying lottery tickets at supermarket
A suspect is accused of murdering a man he got into an argument with at a Florida supermarket while buying lottery tickets, authorities said.
On Feb. 5 around 6:15 p.m., Osmel Lugo Gutierrez, 51, was in Publix in Coral Gables when he began fighting with 50-year-old Franklyn Jose Pineyro in the customer service area, according to WSVN.
As the men’s dispute escalated, Pineyro allegedly lunged toward Gutierrez but lost his footing, WTVJ reported, citing a police report.
When Pineyro allegedly again took a step toward the suspect, police said, Gutierrez lifted up his shirt and “brandished a 9mm Glock 19 pistol from his front waistband and immediately discharged the firearm once, striking the victim in his chest.”
Pineyro was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It’s just someone getting in line, why destroy your life in five seconds?” shopper Rafael Pedie asked WTVJ of the murder caught on surveillance video. “What’s the point? One dead and one ruined his life.”
Publix said in a statement the grocery store is cooperating with local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
Gutierrez faces a second-degree murder charge, and he is being held in the Miami-Dade jail without bond.
