A Georgia couple repeatedly turned off the ventilator leading to the death of the 1-year-old child, police say.

Tyrone Christopher Scott, 34, and Salena Devine Tyler-Scott, 21, now face murder and first-degree cruelty to children charges. They are being held in Richmond County (Georgia) jail.

The parents were told several times by hospital staff not to touch or turn off the ventilator, but they did repeatedly, according to arrest records obtained by WRDW. The incidents happened at the couple’s home.

The child was taken to an Augusta, Georgia, hospital and pronounced dead, according to arrest records.

Georgia officials only provided FrontPageDetectives with an arrest report that omitted details of the alleged crime when requested. The child’s death happened earlier this month.

Police wrote that there was neglect on both parents’ part that led to the child’s death. Coroner Mark Bowen also blamed neglect for the death, WRDW reported.

“Anytime I hear about a child dying at that young age — and especially if there’s any kind of suspicion that the parents are involved, it shocks me,” neighbor Kinyon Mincey told the station.

“That’s not cool to kill no child,” she continued. “That’s the most precious gift in life is a child. That’s the most innocent thing in the world.”
