Prison Staffer Caught Having Sex With Georgia Inmate Serving Life May Be Pregnant With His Child: Officials

A Georgia woman who worked as a surgical technician at the Augusta State Medical Prison was caught having sex with one of the inmates, according to authorities.

On June 23, prison officials were conducting a head count at the Grovetown facility and noticed an inmate, later identified as 36-year-old Joshua Demery, was not present, The Augusta Press reported.

Guards began to search the prison, which is when they found 30-year-old Faatimah Maddox alone with the inmate in an operating room that had not been active in two years, according to authorities.

Staff also found soiled sheets with a mixture of bodily fluids and hair in the room, officials said.

Maddox confessed to having sex multiple times with Demery, who is serving a life sentence for shooting a woman in the face during a 2012 robbery.

She also revealed she was three or four months pregnant and Demery may be her baby's father, The Augusta Press reported.

Maddox was arrested and charged with sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority, a felony that carries a possible 25-year prison sentence, officials said.

Georgia law states a prison guard can be charged with sexual assault even if the prisoner consents, The Augusta Press reported.

Maddox was transferred to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, where she was being held without bond.
