A Georgia man pleaded guilty to charges of murder, rape and necrophilia on the day his trial was set to begin, officials announced.
On May 17, 2020, Kenny Obyran Whitehead, 58, followed a 49-year-old woman to the steps of the Daybreak Day Resource Center in Macon and violently attacked her, authorities said.
According to the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office, the victim was homeless and reportedly felt safer sleeping on the steps of the ministry since it had security cameras.
During the attack, the victim was asphyxiated. Authorities said the woman was sexually assaulted by Whitehead both before and after her death.
Deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office caught Whitehead actively sexually assaulting the woman’s dead body and was immediately arrested.
The DA’s office said DNA evidence was also used to identify Whitehead as the woman’s assailant.

On June 26, the day Whitehead’s trial was set to begin, he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
He was sentenced to life in prison after his plea and will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 30 years, officials said.
In a statement, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Anita Howard said, “This is a tragic case, illuminating the risks of people who are unhoused. Thanks to the Bibb County Sheriff’s deputies and the prosecution team on this case, Mr. Whitehead won’t be on the streets hurting anyone again.”
