Teenager in California Opens Fire, Kills Man in Sedan Outside High School Before Graduation Ceremony: Cops
A California suspect is behind bars after he killed a man outside school where a scheduled graduation was to take place, authorities said.
On June 2, Daveyon Dickie Lee Woodley, 19, was charged with first-degree murder charge with a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, discharging a firearm in a school zone and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations in connection with the death of 20-year-old Austin House in Banning, Patch reported.
According to police, around 5:30 p.m. on May 31, police responded to Banning High School after receiving reports of shots fired.
A school resource officer on the school’s campus to monitor a graduation ceremony “witnessed a male suspect wearing a white mask, black long-sleeve shirt and grey pants shooting into a black sedan that was traveling eastbound … in front of the high school,” police said.
Officials said the vehicle crashed and the suspected shooter, Woodley, fled the scene.
House, the driver of the vehicle, was hit by multiple rounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Woodley was located a short time later hiding in the garage of a nearby home.
“While searching adjacent properties, a loaded handgun was located just outside of the garage Woodley was found hiding in,” police said, according to Patch.
No bail was set for the suspect, who was being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
Officials have not disclosed a possible motive for the murder.
