A 62-year-old homeless man died after being attacked by another homeless man in Iowa, and now police say the suspect has been charged with murder.

In Sept. 2021, police said a Polk County deputy witnessed 62-year-old Timothy Guy Thacker being assaulted and the deputy stopped to intervene.

Officials said Thacker had received serious head and facial injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. He died five days later from his injuries.

At the time, 52-year-old Tony Wayne Hyde was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on a felony count of assault causing serious injury, KCRG reported.

After Thacker died his death was ruled a homicide. Officials said the charges against Hyde were then upgraded to first-degree murder.

Polk County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Paul Parizek told KCRG the victim and the suspect were both homeless and the fight appeared to be over a homeless camp.
