An 80-year-old bar owner in Illinois died after being assaulted on New Year’s Eve by one of the patrons. Now, police say the patron has been charged in connection to his murder.
On Dec. 31, police say 27-year-old Dalton C. McDermott assaulted Angelo A. Manci Jr. outside Parkway Pub in Springfield, Illinois.
Manci was transported to the hospital and he died from his injuries on Jan. 14, police said.
On Jan. 13, McDermott was arrested at a motel by Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office deputies, The State Journal-Register reported.
At the time of the incident, he was charged with two counts of aggravated battery involving another person at the bar that same evening. He was booked into jail and was being held on a $350,000 bond, officials said.
After Manci died, Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright announced an upgraded charge against McDermott, as he was now facing a first-degree murder charge, The State Journal-Register stated.
Investigators have not said what allegedly caused McDermott to assault the bar owner.
