A woman reportedly shot her cousin on the Indiana Toll Road and then proceeded to take him to the hospital, according to authorities. But, the victim did not survive, and now the woman faces criminal charges.
On Sept. 28, the Indiana State Police said they were called to investigate a homicide that occurred on the Indiana Toll Road.
During the investigation, they discovered the Gary Police Department responded to a report at the Northlake Hospital of a man having a gunshot wound, police said.
Officials said the victim was driven to the hospital.
Police said they discovered the shooting took place while the victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his cousin.
According to authorities, 26-year-old Ayana Rashawnda Jamerson drove her cousin to the hospital, along with another person who was in the vehicle.
Jamerson gave several different names to police while she was at the hospital, as well as different versions of what had occurred that night, police said.
Detectives later determined the victim was shot by Jamerson as a result of an argument that took place, officials said. The victim, Kevin Pruitt, 27, was flown from Northlake to a hospital in Chicago, where he would later die from his injuries, authorities said.
Jamerson was arrested and charged with murder, police said. She is currently being held in the Lake County Jail, officials said.
