Friends and family held a vigil in Nicholson’s honor on May 12. Jacques Nalls was dating Nicholson’s mom when Amari was born and he told KVVU the child was easy to care for as a baby.

“He was just a calm, sweet baby ... he was never difficult, never. If you heard him cry, it’s because he needed something," Nalls told the station.

Rhodes was charged with open murder and is being held in jail without bond.
