The parents of a 2-month-old infant have been arrested in Louisiana after they allegedly inflicted life-threatening injuries upon the baby, according to authorities.

On Jan. 14, detectives started investigating a case in which a 2-month-old baby had sustained serious injuries, according to the Bogalusa Police Department.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation revealed the injuries were caused intentionally.

The infant was flown to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, where medical staff determined the baby also had old injuries, which were in the healing process, and classified them as severe, officials said of the suspected physical abuse.

The infant was treated and eventually released into the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services, but the child could potentially suffer long-term effects from the multiple injuries.

The child’s parents, later identified as 30-year-old Andrew Scott and 24-year-old Alexis Bolton, claimed they were unsure how the infant received the old and new severe injuries, but detectives claimed the pair were the only people in the residence at the time they likely occurred.

On Jan. 23, Bolton and Scott were arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder, due to the age of the child and the severity of the injuries, as well as cruelty to juveniles, and domestic abuse battery, officials said.

Investigators determined Bolton had additional children, including a 3-year-old. This child allegedly sustained injuries consistent with physical abuse previously while residing with Bolton and Scott, according to authorities.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further details may be released at a later time.
