Tourist Accused of Fatally Stabbing Ex-Wife in His Room at MGM Grand in Las Vegas

A man has been arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his ex-wife to death at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to authorities.
Around 1:30 p.m. on May 28, officers responded to a call about a possible suicidal person at the MGM Grand, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Once in the hotel room, officers found Fernando Gomez, who had several wounds on his forearm and neck. They also found a dead woman lying on the floor, who was later identified as Gomez’s ex-wife, Nydia Lopez-Garcia, KTNV reported.
Gomez told officers he and Nydia were married for 14 years, but split in 2022. Earlier in May, Lopez-Garcia reached back to Gomez and they would occasionally meet up, KTNV reported.
Those meet-ups would usually lead to a fight, Gomez said. He claimed to police that Nydia said in the past that “they should just kill each other and leave everything to their children,” according to KTNV.
Several weeks ago, Gomez allegedly told Lopez-Garcia that he wasn’t a good father or husband during their marriage and asked her to come to Las Vegas, which she agreed to do. Nydia reportedly didn’t want their children to know, so she told them “she was seeing a man named Sam and he had paid for everyone to go to Las Vegas, KTNV reported.
Court records show the children had a room at Mandalay Bay and Gomez had a room at the MGM Grand.
According to the arrest report, Gomez and Lopez-Garcia initially had no issues. Around 4 a.m. on May 28, however, the pair went back to Gomez’s room and started to get physical before a fight began, the report states.
During that fight, Gomez smashed a Johnny Walker bottle on the ground and alleged his ex walked over to him, grabbed a piece of glass and held it to her throat, KTNV reported.

According to Gomez, Nydia allegedly told him to “do it” and as he was pushing the glass into her neck, he said she was laughing, according to KTNV. Gomez then allegedly cut his own arms and neck before he passed out.
Gomez eventually woke up covered in blood and went to the bathroom to clean up. He then, police said, called one of his friends to tell them what he did. Gomez told officers he “wanted to jump off the building but one of his friends talked him out of it.”
He called 911 and during the call, he allegedly said, “I have made a mistake of my life. I fight with the mother of my kids last night and we tried to kill each other and she’s dead,” KTNV reported.
Gomez was arrested and taken to University Medical Center for his injuries.
Their children were found unharmed at Mandalay Bay and Child Protective Services took custody of them, authorities said.
