A man in Oklahoma was arrested after allegedly fatally shooting his live-in girlfriend and then living with her decomposing body for almost a week, according to authorities.
On March 25, police responded to a home in Oklahoma City after a visitor reported seeing a possible dead body, the Oklahoma City Police Department said.
Once at the residence, officers tried to contact Jake Harris, 31, but he “refused to come out of the house,” officials said.
The Oklahoma City Tactical Unit also responded to the scene and police said they “took Harris into custody after several hours.”
KOTV-TV reported that hours into the negotiations, Harris started shooting. Police ended up using a battering ram to crash into the home. Video also showed police firing non-lethal rounds before Harris surrendered, officials said.
Police searched the home and found Harris’ girlfriend, 40-year-old Amanda Miller, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
Investigators determined Harris and Miller had an argument before the shooting took place. KOTV-TV reported that Harris “grabbed his shotgun during the argument.”
Danielle Mayfield, Miller’s daughter, told KOTV-TV her mother “grabbed the gun, he shot her in her side and killed her.”

According to investigators, they believe “the shooting took place several days prior.” Miller’s children talked with KOTV-TV and said Miller’s body was in a state of decomposition on the garage floor when police forced their way into the home.
KOTV-TV reported there was a history of abuse between Harris and Miller and Miller had left Harris once before.
Shaylynn Montoya, Miller’s daughter, told KOTV-TV, “I told her please don’t go back over there mom. And I guess the day she left, she went back over there.”

Harris was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, officials said. He was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center without bond.
Miller is reportedly survived by four daughters and 10 grandchildren. Mayfield said, “She was the best Mimi in the world, and them kids lost a great Mimi. He took her from them,” KOTV-TV reported.
