An Alabama man has been arrested after he allegedly killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s teenage daughter and injured her young son, according to authorities.

Around 12 p.m. on June 19, officers responded to an apartment complex in Birmingham and found a 15-year-old girl, later identified as Cornelia Lathan, and a 5-year-old boy with apparent gunshot wounds, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

Medics pronounced the girl dead at the scene. The boy was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Police determined 27-year-old Otis Montgomery III shot the victims during a domestic disturbance.

Montgomery is reportedly the ex-boyfriend of the victims’ mother, who is pregnant and was also transported to a hospital for observation, according to police reports obtained by AL.com.

Investigators believe Montgomery allegedly stood in the parking lot of the apartment complex and opened fire.

Witnesses told police they heard several shots and Montgomery fled the area on foot.

Within an hour of the shooting, police were able to locate the suspect.

Montgomery was arrested and charged with capital murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, officials said.

He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and was being held without bond.

Police Chief Scott Thurmond told AL.com that officers were called to the apartment earlier in the day regarding a verbal domestic disturbance, and they had responded to the home for domestic calls in the past.
