Law enforcement officials in Florida say a man was accused of shoplifting in a gas station, so he pulled out a gun and opened fire, killing two and critically injuring another.
According to an arrest report obtained by WPLG, Shamun Shaukat was about to close the Chevron gas station when he suspected 23-year-old Jason Dyer-Mitchell was shoplifting and he confronted him.
Around 12:30 a.m. on April 13, Dyer-Mitchell pulled out a gun and started shooting — killing Shaukat, 42, and Shahbaz Hussain and critically injuring Elijah Shorter, a customer in the store, officials said.
Police used surveillance footage to identify Dyer-Mitchell, thanks to the black hoodie he was wearing with the word “POWER” in white. The sweatshirt was from Powerhouse Gym Miami, where he was a member.
Police located Dyer-Mitchell at an apartment across the street from the gas station and he was arrested. He refused to talk with detectives after his arrest.
In the apartment, officials said they found a fanny pack with a 9mm magazine and an IWI Masada 9mm pistol.
Court records say Dyer-Mitchel was arrested in January 2022 after he put a nail between his knuckles and punched another man in the face.
He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and drug and alcohol charges at the time.

Prosecutors dropped the drug charges and he was sentenced to 2 years of probation, which ended in September 2023.
Now he was booked into jail and charged with two counts of second degree murder and another count of battery on a visitor or another detainee at the jail, according to jail records.
