A Minnesota woman has been arrested after police say she allegedly fatally stabbed her ex-boyfriend and then told officers that “someone had to end it.”
Shortly after midnight on Aug. 4, officers responded to a call in Moorhead in reference to a possible stabbing, according to the Moorhead Police Department.
On scene, officers located the victim, 47-year-old Willard DeGroat, with a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Officers said the suspect, 47-year-old Connie Jo Frank, returned to the scene and she was taken into custody.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by KSTP-TV, DeGroat and Frank had previously been in a relationship for five years.
Police spoke with a witness, who said they heard DeGroat and Frank arguing that evening, and the dispute escalated into a physical fight, according to the criminal complaint states.
The witness said he asked Frank’s adult child to help with the situation. When they returned to the scene, they found DeGroat with the stab wound and saw Frank had fled, authorities said.
While police were transporting Frank to jail, officers said she allegedly made multiple statements, including, “I stabbed his a**” and “I would kill him again."
When talking with detectives, Frank said she had been staying at her son’s house when her ex-boyfriend came over and knocked on the windows, police said.
Frank admitted she retrieved a knife from the kitchen, stabbed DeGroat once in the chest and then fled to her neighbor’s backyard, according to the criminal complaint. She then reportedly came back to speak with police.

Investigators were able to recover a knife near the scene and obtained surveillance video evidence that allegedly showed Frank shouting at DeGroat and DeGroat yelling for someone to call 911.
Frank was booked into the Clay County Jail and charged with second-degree murder, officials said.
