A man has been arrested after he allegedly vandalized an Islamic Center in Indiana.
Adam L. Walls, 32, has been arrested and preliminarily charged with institutional criminal mischief, a felony. There is no hate crime statute in Indiana.
The responding officer spoke to the president of the Center, who stated that he had reviewed surveillance footage, according to Bloomington police.
Around 6:40 a.m. Oct. 18, officers responded to the Islamic Center of Bloomington in Indiana, located in the 1900 block of E Atwater Avenue, for a report of prior vandalism.
The footage allegedly showed what appeared to be a white male with short hair and layered clothing entering the playground area around 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 18, according to Bloomington police.
The man could be seen damaging several picnic tables and dumping trash cans over.
The suspect also allegedly broke sections of the metal fencing around the playground, authorities noted.
Police say he also damaged an air conditioning unit by pulling wires from it, broke one of the security cameras that point towards the playground and broke several toys that were in the playground before leaving the area around 2 a.m.
Photographs of the suspect were sent to local media outlets on Oct. 19 in an effort to identify the man.
An officer reviewed the footage and provided the investigating detective with the possible identity of the suspect as Walls, as the officer was familiar with the suspect from other run-ins.
Detectives foundWallshim in the early morning hours of Oct. 21 near the Shalom Center, police said. After an interview, Walls was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail.
