A Memphis man allegedly left his wife lying on the floor for days after she suffered a stroke and didn't call police until he “got tired of looking at her on the floor,” according to a report.
John Burkhart was charged this week with aggravated neglect of a vulnerable adult, WREG reported.
Tammy Burkhard, John’s wife, was brought to St. Francis Hospital by the Memphis Fire Department with severe injuries on Aug.12, WREG reported.
Tammy Burkhart was suffering from bruising over her entire body, had feces under her fingernails and a possible broken nose, according to reports obtained by WREG.
After a neurological exam, a St. Francis doctor told police Tammy Burkhard had brain swelling possible due to a stroke, and advised police that her speech and right-side body functions were impaired, WREG reported.
When police asked John Burkhart about his wife's condition, he said she fell out of bed inside their Sherwood Forest, Tennessee home, according to WREG.
When he asked her to get up, he said she didn’t respond, and instead of calling for help, he left her on the floor, WREG reported.
John Burkhard called the Memphis Fire Department after four to five days, according to WREG. Tammy Burkhart died less than a week after being found.
Burkhart is being held on a $25,000 bond and his next court appearance is set for Oct. 26, according to WREG.
