Around 11 p.m. on May 22, officers were notified of the incident at a residence in Southfield, WWJ Newsradio reported.
Once at the scene, police found a 51-year-old man who was badly bleeding from severe gashes to his face and upper body. Police rendered aid until medics arrived and the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition, WWJ Newsradio reported.
Police believe the man's 22-year-old son struck him with a hatchet and then fled the scene before officers arrived.
An alert was issued for the son and about 40 minutes later, a trooper spotted the vehicle in Detroit, according to WWJ.
The trooper was able to pull over the vehicle and arrested the son without incident. A search of the vehicle turned up the alleged weapon, a hatchet covered in blood, officials said.
