A 23-year-old Michigan man has been accused of beating his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter to death.
On Dec. 18, police said deputies were sent to a residence in Pontiac, Michigan, after receiving a report of an unconscious 3-year-old.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Aziya Matthews, 3, neither breathing nor conscious, according to authorities.
Aziya was immediately taken to the hospital and was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, where she passed away on Dec. 20, officials said.

According to detectives, hospital staff said Aziya had multiple broken ribs that were in different stages of healing, multiple round wounds on her legs and stomach that seemed to be burned from a lit cigarette, two black eyes, severe head trauma and a collapsed lung, WDIV reported.
In a statement from Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told WDIV, “It’s hard to imagine a human being can be so cruel and inhumane. This poor tortured child deserved to be treated as a blessing and loved. We will hold the responsible accountable.”
Police said 23-year-old Shean Troy Amerson, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was arrested and charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse in connection to the death of Aziya.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4, officials said.
