A Michigan man is facing charges after authorities allege he fatally shot his teenage ex-girlfriend when she tried to end their relationship.
Around 9:20 p.m. on Feb. 16, officers responded to a hotel in Canton in reference to a shooting, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Once at the scene, officers found 19-year-old Veronica Crain behind the front desk with a gunshot wound to the head.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old Joseph Slocum Jr., went into the hotel and shot Crain before fleeing the scene.
Moments later, Canton police officers responding to a car accident found Slocum injured and lying in the road.
First responders transported Slocum to a local hospital for treatment.
He was charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm and arraigned on Feb. 26.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, "I say this often: The most dangerous time for a domestic violence victim is when they are trying to leave the relationship. Horrifyingly, this case is a textbook example."
Slocum is next scheduled to appear in court on May 3.
