On Sept. 4, Hampton County Sheriff’s office received a call from Alex Murdaugh, who reported he was shot near Varnville, South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

He was taken to the hospital for a “superficial” gunshot wound to the head, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Agents with the division collected evidence, interviewed witnesses and followed up on potential leads. There have been no arrests in the case, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Investigators did not say if they believe the gunshot was self-inflicted.

“As we have previously stated, we cannot and will not do anything that could jeopardize the integrity of this or any potentially related investigation or that would violate the due process afforded to all in our constitutional system of justice,” South Carolina Law Enforcement Division officials said in a statement.

Murdaugh was father to Paul Murdaugh and husband to Maggie Murdaugh.

Earlier this year, Paul and Maggie Murdaugh were found murdered at the family’s property in South Carolina. Police have yet to make an arrest in connection to the double-murder but continue to investigate.

Few details have been released about the double-murder investigation, leaving some to wonder if the killings are connected to a 2019 boat crash.

The family was thrust into the spotlight after a February 2019 boat crash where Mallory Beach, 19, was killed. Police alleged Paul Murdaugh was drunk behind the wheel of a boat with several college-age people onboard when he crashed it.

Several other people were hurt in the wreck.

Charges were not filed in the crash’s immediate aftermath leading some to claim preferential treatment for the powerful family. In April 2019, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office announced charges against Paul Murdaugh in connection to the boat crash.

The charges against Paul Murdaugh were active when he was found murdered.
