Australian Woman Became So Enraged With Man ‘For Reasons Unknown’ That She Bent Frying Pan While Killing Him
An Australian woman was sentenced to serve up to 24 years behind bars for beating an elderly man to death with dumbbells and a frying pan.
Narelle Fiona Smith, 48, recently learned her fate after she was convicted in November for causing the death of 77-year-old retiree Peter James McCarthy in South Coogee, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“The ferocity and brutality of the offender’s attack was extreme,” the judge overseeing the case said about the slaying during an “explosive and sustained fit of anger.”
“The murder was exacerbated by the state in which the offender left the body, her ransacking of his apartment and theft of some of his possessions,” the judge added.
In December 2020, was visiting the victim and “became enraged with him for reasons unknown and beat him to death with a frying pan,” prosecutors said.
The frying pan had a broken handle and was “significantly bent,” according to officials.
She then stole three of his bank cards and other items.
The victim’s ex-wife found the body, which was lying next to two dumbbells and a frying pan used in the deadly attack.
In Janaury 2021, police arrested Smith and charged her with McCarthy’s murder.
She will not be eligible for parole until 2036.
